The adjustment of haemopoiesis is just one of the many other changes that take place in the mother's body during pregnancy, all of then serving the development and growth of the embryo and foetus. Multiple factors lead to anaemia in pregnancy, nutritional iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) being the commonest. Underlying inflammatory conditions, physiological haemodilution and several factors affecting Hemoglobin and iron status in pregnancy lead to difficulties in establishing a definitive diagnosis.
